Digital art and creative practices across the digital entertainment industries provide unique opportunities for students to specialise in key areas of expertise. Ranging from character artists, environment and concept artists, where roles extend to supportive content creation, to include crafting props for complex game spaces, menu assets or 2D media for multi-channel product campaigns & distribution.

Games and interactive media are at the forefront of the creative entertainment sectors, with digital games converging with more traditional forms of consumer media. As a course, we aim to produce creatives who can drive this medium forward, with creative thinking and artistic authorship at its centre. Students aspirations and areas of curiosity will form the basis by which they will iterate and evolve to produced work with unique and individual qualities.
As part of this process, students will be encouraged to share best practice and information/interests within peer groups to help their work to critically progress and develop. They will also be encouraged to explore outside of their subject specific areas, and use non-games, media and artefacts as disruption tools to encourage novel and unique identities in practice.
In line with the Education Strategy 2016-2021, the course will support students to become innovative, independent learners and critical thinkers. They will be encouraged to reflect upon their learning experience and engage in all aspects of University life.
At Level 4, students will be orientated and integrated into their new learning environment. They will develop a sound understanding of the key concepts the knowledge/skills required for successful completion of the course.
At Level 5 the emphasis will be consolidation and deeper contextualisation as they become more immersed in their specialisms.
At Level 6, students will be required to demonstrate a significant level of impendence as they become increasingly knowledgeable and reflective. At the end of their studies, students will be able to demonstrate the application of their knowledge and skills within real-world contexts.

2.Have a comprehensive understanding of the appropriate digital technique and technologies needed to create 2D and 3D art works, within the area of games art.

3.Have the ability to analyse and interact with the creative community, to enhance and reflect upon their own working practices and methodologies.

4.Have the ability to critically evaluate and engage with abstract and novel concepts to produce a body of creative work.

By the end of Level 4, you will be able to:

1 Develop 2D/3D visualisation, concepting and compositional skills.
2 Learn the fundamental principles of design practice in relation to critical visual research strategies. 3 Work independently and collaboratively in groups to present solutions related to visual design theory/practice.

At Level 5, you will be able to:
1 Continue to develop 2D/3D visualisation, concepting and compositional skills.
2 Learn to implement game technologies and media in the form of an integrated project.
3 Understand and critically apply studies in relation to game art and contemporary culture.

At Level 6, you will be able to:
1 Undertake detailed academic and practical research in an area appropriate to the student's chosen project.
2 Learn fundamental applied technology skills in the production and creation of games art
3 Apply practical learning in the creation of a personal portfolio and profile, ready for related digital industries

It is important for your progression and achievement that you submit all work for all assignments in a timely manner. It is also important that you keep copies of all work submitted until after you have graduated. You should also keep any receipts confirming the submission of assignments. In the event of your submitted work being lost you may be required to produce a copy of the work and submission receipt. If you are unable to do so, your work will not be marked.

It is important to note that submitting all assignments is a requirement of your course. Assessed work will normally be returned with appropriate feedback within four weeks of your submission. Within its Learning and Assessment Strategy, the course adopts a 20 credit & two 40 credit study model at L4, increasing to an 80-credit module & two 20 credit modules & level 5 & 6. The approach fostesr & encourages independent, deeper subject enquiry as well as creative and critical thinking within its cohort. A student-centred experience is fundamental to the design of the course and its delivery across all study years, as well as an agile approach in responding to industry and employability needs & requirements.
The large modules are facilitated by an organic and holistic approach to learning. This provides students with a creative learning environment that tolerates mistake making. The flux of discovery and synthesis embedded within design practice & creative development invariably leads to peaks and troughs that rarely conform to the shorter blocks of assessment normally associated with conventionally sized modules units.

The Course employs a wide range of learning opportunities and teaching methods, informed by curriculum review, pedagogic research and continuous staff development. Course Review, Enhancement Meetings and Student Rep sessions are annually scheduled as part of our planning processes where the performance of modules and teaching methods are evaluated, addressed, and actioned by the course team.
Aligning to the University's Strategic Plan and KPI's, the course will prioritise the key areas of improving and widening participation, research & enterprise and commitment to employability within the region. Within the context of the School (Leeds School of Arts) the course is reflective of the current School's Strategic Plan of expanding its creative technologies portfolio.

The University expects you to attend and contribute fully to all mandatory sessions on your timetable as set out in your student contract. Engagement in your lectures, seminars and practicals is an important part of your learning - contributing both to the University community and the learning experience of your fellow students on the course. This includes engagement in scheduled virtual learning and activities and meetings in online environments related to your studies.

We monitor your engagement at the University as regular attendance and academic achievement are closely linked. Moreover, by monitoring your engagement and attendance we can identify students who may need our guidance or support at an early stage to help them progress in their studies. Students are responsible for obtaining their own placement, with assistance from the University. The locations will vary, dependant on the opportunity.

At Leeds Beckett, all undergraduate students will develop three graduate attributes, which are embedded across every level: enterprise, digital literacy, global outlook. These skills provide a firm basis for a range of careers and professional contexts the graduate might encounter, whether through a conventional graduate track, within the creative industries, through freelance and self-employment or as a 'portfolio' worker.

Enterprise
-Developing innovative solutions to specified project briefs
-Pitching creative ideas in written, verbal and graphical formats
-Developing a deep & critical understanding of the games art & creative industries through contextual research
-Producing professional & industry ready portfolios Enterprise on this course is embedded in several modules at all levels. For example, at L4 students gain practical skills in developing assets reflective of creative industries and art practices, informed through iterative design methodologies, teaching them to reflect on alternative solutions to visual problem solving & image making.
At Level 5 this is further developed through a critical approach to game art, where students investigate digital media in relation to art, culture and academic studies. This is underpinned by projects that introduce and facilitate professional practice in respect to asset production pipelines and industry game engine & visualisation technologies.
At Level 6, students participate in modules that enable focus and development of a final personal portfolio of professional quality products, aimed at industry and suitable for publishing on a variety of mediums and platforms.

Global Outlook
Students and graduates will develop reflective and critical skills with a global perspective by:

-Creating products appropriate for the international markets
-Integrate a wide range of cultural and ethnic influences in their concept development
The Global Outlook is embedded in several modules at all three levels. At level 4 students consider international perspectives by researching and developing visual styles and themes from cultures, epochs and locales as part of the Game Art Fundamentals & Game Design Theory module(s). At L5 Cultural Studies & Character Art inform and allow students to consider the role of game art in relation to industries as well as impacts on culture and representation in media.

Localisation of game art for foreign territories is also considered when designing and developing media, addressed and embedded in modules at all levels. Projects as designed and implemented during the final year of study, will aim to be reflective of issues surrounding diversity and inclusivity in respect to audiences/consumers of the game media and industries, drawn from a market that is inherently international and multicultural.Digitally Literate Students will develop Digital Literacy skills via:

-Producing assets using professional software & hardware systems
-Researching solutions to complex problems using digital & academic authoritative sources
-Through prototyping, design iteration to evaluate the capabilities and limitations of digital technologies
-Information literacy and the ability to assimilate data from a variety of sources linked and evaluated as part of assessment strategies
Digital literacy is an integral part of this course and is embedded in all modules across the 3 levels of study. The course is informed by its relationship with professional organisations and practitioners, where we frequently receive feedback on current industrial practices and processes. As a result of consultation, we annually review and specify (where required/appropriate) new software and hardware for our course. Previous examples are the introduction of a new game engine & visualisation technologies, installation of Z-Brush software, PBR toolsets and graphic tablets in labs as well as VR headsets.

Students engage in improving Digital Literacy skills through investigating technologies and related visualisation systems, learning to acquire & implement visual content appropriate to production/workflow pipelines. Ideation and concept art production are supported by practical visual and active research strategies that employ a range of traditional evaluation methods to generate novel approaches to game art production. An understanding of the role of game art as an artefact of popular culture in both science and entertainment-based contexts underpins study during L5 study, thus serving as a provision to promote individual student enquiry.
The Individual Portfolio & Industry Project modules introduce students to further research techniques in developing student-led practical skill. Additionally, the dissertation project will enhance the student's ability to critically evaluate and reflect upon their practice alongside that of their peers.

The course is designed so students are prepared and graduate with a broad set of transferable skills appropriate for the games and creative digital industries.
Students learn to prototype ideas and create digital content, integrating media within game contexts and interactive/visualisation systems. Production tools include middleware engines such as Unity3D and Unreal Engine, as well as digital 2D/3D imaging tools, Substance Painter, Adobe Creative Suite and 3DsMax & Zbrush.
Students are provided with a structured learning & skills progressing through the course, where they are able to specialise and tailor their creative and employment aspirations within their final year of study. Placements and study abroad programmes are introduced within Level 5 (sandwich year) to assist in furthering specialist technical and employability skills.
The school has a dedicated Employer Engagement Team, and Employability & Placement Administrator, who provide a service for both teaching staff and students in offering assistance in promoting events and graduate opportunities. If you have a question or a problem relating to your course, your Course Administrator is there to help you. Course Administrators work closely with academic staff and can make referrals to teaching staff or to specialist professional services as appropriate. They can give you a confirmation of attendance letter, and a transcript. You may also like to contact your Course Rep or the Students' Union Advice team for additional support with course-related questions.

Your Academic Advisor will be an academic member of staff who teaches you on your course. Your Course Director will make sure that you are given the contact details of your Academic Advisor at the beginning of each year, usually in your course induction. If you need support, but you're not sure where to go, your Student Advice Team are here to help. The team are an essential part of your Student Support Network and are dedicated to ensuring you can access the advice and support you need, when you need it most.

Student Advice can also help in the practical elements of university. The team will produce your first campus card and assist you in replacing your campus card if needed throughout your time at Leeds Beckett. They can provide Confirmation of Enrolment and Bank Letters for our current students and full or partial transcripts for our graduates and fully enrolled students.

If you need help with more complex queries or concerns, our trained Student Life Advisers offer 1-1 appointments, providing a safe, confidential, and non-judgemental space to talk about your circumstances and identify support that you can access both within and outside of the university.

The Student Voice & Insight team at LBSU works alongside the elected Academic Experience Officer to effectively represent students' academic interests.

We provide support, training and ongoing development to over 1,000 Course Representatives, Postgraduate Research Reps, Student Community Leaders and Global Majority Student Ambassadors who represent you whilst you study at Leeds Beckett; and facilitate the collection of student feedback on your academic experience.

Register with us

• We will ask you to provide evidence of your disability, usually from a health professional or educational psychologist. Don't worry if you haven't got any, we can support you with this.
• Usually, we will arrange an appointment with your Disability Adviser to discuss any adjustments you might need and support you in applying for Disabled Students' Allowances (DSA).

The Library offers 24/7 support for your studies. You can access thousands of resources via MyBeckett or the Library website which also provides full details of all our services.

Library Academic Support

The Library Academic Support Team can help you develop your academic skills such as critical thinking, academic writing and analysing data, and research skills such as how to find, use and evaluate information for your studies. The team liaises with your lecturers to provide the information resources you need for your subject and to arrange academic skills sessions to support you in your studies.

The team maintains a number of websites and modules to support your learning:

• In your Subject guide, you'll find a variety of information resources which have been selected as a good starting point for research in that area. These are available on the Skills and Subject Support web page or via My Beckett.
• On the Skills for Learning website, you'll find online resources covering topics such as essay writing, research and time management, English Language and academic English plus information to help you reference and avoid plagiarism, alongside details of workshops that are designed to help you succeed in your assessments. • LBU Study Smart is a module in MyBeckett which introduces you to the key skills and services you'll need to study successfully at Leeds Beckett. There are also additional modules you can take as you move through your course to help you transition between study levels. The Academic Integrity Tutorial is a module in MyBeckett which introduces you to academic integrity at LBU and will help you develop the skills you need to attain good academic practice, including avoiding plagiarism and academic referencing.

OneDrive

OneDrive Leeds Beckett is your individual file storage with 1TB of storage space. With OneDrive you can access and share your files across your devices. Media Equipment - free loans

University life can have its ups and downs, and occasionally you may find yourself in need of advice. That's where we come in. Here at the SU we have a free advice service that is here just for you, the students at Leeds Beckett University.

The Advice Service at LBSU is a confidential, non-judgmental service run by professional advisers.

The service is independent from the University, so if you are having any problems with your course you can talk confidentially with us - although we do work with the University to find the best solutions, we would only contact them with your permission. We can advise on a range of topics including all aspects of the University Regulations and Procedures, housing issues and finance issues. We can guide you through any processes or procedures.

The course has available a variety of game development technologies that are available to students via the IT Helpdesk as well as development software available in our labs.

Course Representatives (Reps) at undergraduate and postgraduate taught levels are student volunteers who represent you in formal and informal meetings with the University, and follow up on actions that have occurred because of student feedback. You can become a Course Rep, volunteering to represent the views of your peers in order to improve students' academic experience.

In the first few weeks of your time at Leeds Beckett, your Course Director will facilitate an opportunity to appoint Course Reps on your course.

Being a Course Rep provides you with an opportunity to enhance your own learning and the development of relevant professional and employability skills alongside your studies. As a Course Rep you would play an important role in:

• Gathering feedback from students on your course to inform enhancements to the quality of your course and the student experience.
